Thought-provoking technology: Careers at RELX Group

The shortage of skilled technology workers in some of the world’s biggest labour markets is widely recognised, and companies are working harder than ever to ensure they are attracting the expertise they need to compete in an increasingly digital world. In the second of our series of personal stories about the intensifying battle for technology talent, we meet Flavio Villanustre, Vice President of Technology at LexisNexis Risk Solutions.

RELX Group offers technologists the chance to work with truly cutting-edge, industry-leading technology. HPCC Systems, our proprietary open source big data platform, was developed by LexisNexis Risk Solutions and now powers most of the division’s operations. It can process petabytes of data from thousands of data sources and supports millions of transactions per minute. Flavio comments: "The technology is leading-edge… We’re doing things that others are still dreaming about.”

Flavio leads the development of HPCC Systems, the open-source big data processing platform that powers data analytics across RELX Group. He is also VP of Technology at LexisNexis Risk Solutions, where he is responsible for information and physical security, overall platform strategy and new product development. A qualified neurosurgeon, Flavio worked in medicine before moving into technology.

Flavio has spent 14 years working with HPCC Systems, and is a well-known figure in the open source community. He was first introduced to the HPCC Systems technology in 2002 and says: “It was unlike anything I’d seen before, even though I had a lot of experience in the sector.” He was so fascinated by the technology that he moved to the US to join Seisint, the company developing the platform, which was acquired by LexisNexis Risk Solutions in 2004. “It didn’t take me long to decide to join Seisint – HPCC brought me here and has kept me here after all these years. The technology is as interesting and thought-provoking now as it was 20 years ago. We’re doing things that others are still dreaming about”.

Flavio sees LexisNexis’s reputation as a leading innovator in big data and analytics as a major draw for aspiring technologists. “Our technology is open source, and that is important. It’s a way of giving back to the community, and a way of showing that we can produce things that are very high quality and innovative. If you’re a technologist you don’t want to be buying in an off-the-shelf product, you want to be the one who is actively developing it. It encourages people to take pride in what they do, knowing that they are innovating, ‘pushing the envelope.”

He also credits the strong “ethical motivation” of RELX Group as a key factor in his decision to build a career here. “The integrity of RELX Group is a significant asset…All our core values are properly aligned to make a company I want to work at. It cares about giving back to the community”.

Flavio has been passionate about computing since childhood, and worked as an IT consultant during his years at medical school in his home country of Argentina.  As his career in medicine developed so did his career in technology, and eventually he was forced to choose between the two. In the early 2000s he decided to focus exclusively on technology, expanding his computer consultancy business and becoming director of operations for a data centre company in Argentina before joining Seisint in 2002.
