I joined the business direct from law school 16 years ago – and as I've been here ever since the company must be doing something right! I'm based in Dayton, Ohio and my job is to provide support to customers who need specialist help with LexisNexis legal products. We have a huge global database and if a solicitor is having difficulty locating details on a legal instrument, relating to almost any country in the world, it's my job to guide them. In my early days I spent a lot of time providing support by telephone but now, as a senior consultant, I also interact with our information providers as well as educating and mentoring employees.
My career is a good example of an alternative pathway for somebody with a legal education who isn't excited by being in the boardroom or doing paperwork. For me, the intellectual challenges of working with LexisNexis are more interesting than day-to-day legal practice. Working here allows me to focus on what I enjoy, which is combining my legal background with my product knowledge to help customers achieve better outcomes.
When you're known for your chocolate cookies with peanut butter filling, you tend to be popular and I'm pleased to say that a lot of colleagues are also friends. The company pays us to volunteer for two days a year (I work with The Red Cross) but we also do a lot of charity work in our own time. LexisNexis is a big employer around here and plays an important part in the local community.
