As innovations manager, I explore and support bright ideas that maintain our reputation for innovation and deliver tangible value to the business. I work out of the central London office, within RELX Group Corporate Strategy, but this is an international role that covers all our businesses and regions – so I get to grips with what makes a global business like ours tick.
What really attracted me to the job was the chance to work closely with the chief strategy officer. I'd been working at a consultancy, after graduating from Cambridge University where I studied Chemistry, and as soon as I was aware of this opportunity I had no hesitation in going for it.
Although I do have freedom to pursue ideas that interest or excite me, this is absolutely not a 'fluffy' role. It's very project and execution focused: everything is geared to deliverables. The work is varied – from investigating how mobile apps can help us deliver what our customers want, better than ever before, to getting involved in Action Labs, which are run along the lines of TV's Dragons' Den. We create and develop ideas for four days and then pitch to senior execs for funding. It's great fun and the teams I've been working with have been very successful (so far!).
'Boundarylessness' is a core Reed value and it's one that really interests me. There are countless opportunities ahead of me. Whether I stay at the corporate centre or move around the business and the world, there are no barriers to my career.
