There is a strong Health Science market in Japan today and for the future as growth trends continue. It’s this energy that excites me and being involved in this field is both rewarding and motivational.
My role is as a sales director in our Health Science business in Japan. I’m currently leading a team of around 30 people in sales and sales support.
I joined Elsevier in 2017. Before that, I worked at Thomson Reuters and dealt with financial information. I always felt that the situation in finances was changing dynamically. Everything was moving so much faster. So, fresh, cutting-edge information was really important. And these trends apply equally to the markets I now serve.
Japan’s Health Science market, for a single-country, is one of the largest in the world. Japan’s GDP is the third largest globally, the number of hospital beds per 1,000 people is the highest in the world and Japan is one of only a few super-aged societies.

Elsevier’s products and services position it well to support this growth. However, there is always more to do to ensure our customers fully understand the value we can bring through our evidence-based information as opposed to free, untrusted information straight from the internet. Especially as we are supporting those who are helping to improve and even save patients’ lives.
I think one of Elsevier’s advantages is that we are one of the most trusted and globally recognised companies in the world. That point is really important for any company that is an information provider, as we are, because the importance of technology is increasing and the demand for trustworthy information is also on the rise.
With this social trend, I strongly believe that we can maintain and firmly enhance our presence here in Japan.
