Ben Gilbert
Senior Security Engineer
North Carolina, United States
My favourite part of working here is having creative freedom and a sense of purpose in the projects I’m involved with, allowing me to challenge myself in my work and feel a real sense of pride when going above and beyond on a project.
I began working for RELX in 2017 as a summer cyber-security intern during my final year of university. The internship programme provided a fantastic opportunity to quickly develop my technical skills, collaboration abilities and professional experience within a global organisation.
Before graduating in the inaugural class of Florida Polytechnic University, I was offered a full-time position as a security engineer in Raleigh, North Carolina. Since then, my role has grown in scope as I have taken on more complex problems and greater responsibility within the team.
The goal of nearly everything I do is to continually improve the overall security posture of our infrastructure and applications. One of the outcomes I am most proud of is implementing automated systems that help the team identify and address security issues more quickly. These systems have reduced manual effort and allowed the team to focus on higher-impact work that truly matters, including proactive improvements and long-term engineering solutions.
A key part of my role now also involves mentoring others and contributing to how the team engineers solutions. I have been given the opportunity to help support engineers as they grow their technical and security skills, review designs, and influence the technical direction and strategy of the team.
Because security is an essential part of every business unit, I regularly collaborate with teams across the organisation and around the world. This collaboration, combined with the creative freedom and sense of ownership I have in my work, continues to be the most rewarding part of my experience here.
